Indian Actor Named Sexiest Man Alive.

It was an honour to be named the sexiest man alive but…—Indian actor Akshay Kumar

It was an honour to be named the sexiest man alive but…—Indian actor Akshay Kumar

Bollywood star actor and producer Akshay Kumar rose from a humble beginning on the streets of Chandni Chowk, to being admired by many fans worldwide.
In this interview with Online Editor, LEKAN OTUFODUNRIN and MERCY MICHAEL, the actor opened up on Bollywood @100 and the future of Indian films. He also talked about relationship with his female fans among other things:
YOU have been variously described as the undisputed king of Indian cinema, one of the world’s most famous Indian film stars and the global ambassador for Indian cinema, how would you describe yourself?
I have been so lucky for my career to have been so successful and I am very thankful and grateful to all my loyal fans and the great directors, producers, film crews and actors who have helped me give my best performances. Although I may not have come from a ‘traditional’ background in regards to what makes a successful Bollywood star I believe the support around me and the love of my family (whether or not they have been in the industry) has really been at the roots of my success. Every movie has been momentous and life changing for me because I have learnt, whether to play a different type of role or from the character I’m playing.
As someone who stumbled into acting, what has been your general experience as a film actor and producer?
My journey has been incredible – a guy from the streets of Chandni Chowk, to being admired by my adoring fans the world over, and making my mother, father, wife and children proud of what I have achieved (and yet to) I am truly blessed. I think the key to success for any actor is determination and ambition. Being a producer is a tough job but an extremely satisfying one. As an actor you only have to focus on your character and playing it convincingly. You do what your director wants you to do to the best of your ability, but as a producer it’s the whole film that you have to look after and it’s a big responsibility. As with any industry there will be a number of ups and downs to overcome, therefore it is so important to stay positive at all times. There were times when things were bad, even ugly, but I loved what I did too much to bow down to the pressure.
What are the gains and pains of being a superstar?
I love my profession and working in this industry. I owe my life to it on so many levels. As far as the competition goes, rather than cut throat, I see it as healthy competition which keeps you on your toes – it keeps things fresh and ever evolving. One cannot afford to become complacent in this, or indeed in any other industry. As long as my fans will have me, I am happily here to stay
In 2008 you were named the Sexiest Man alive by People Magazine. How were you able to cope with your numerous female fans then and now?
Numerous female fans? Lol. If a person lets such an honour go to his head, then he will become arrogant. I am so flattered and humbled to have received this notable honour, but I also try and stay grounded and not let it affect me. My main purpose is to make good movies that I’m proud of and happy with at the end of the day, and most importantly, that my fans will like my work.
Compared with other films, what would you say is unique about Indian films?
The Indian Film Industry started out in 1916 and has grown into a multimillion dollar industry. We are a very cultured country so obviously we portray a lot of dance from many cities as well as the multiple cultures and religions we have. We are very full on. Any excuse for a song and a dance number. As the years go by we are making many urban modern day movies but they will always have a touch of Masala. Indian films will always be Indian. It is a genre within itself albeit adaptable to new audiences and wider changes in the world of cinema, but without losing its core essence. The Indian film industry is booming. It has enjoyed a lot of success over the past 100 years as it celebrates its 100 year anniversary in 2013. Indian films have a mass, global appeal as they feature drama, comedy, music, dance and romance all in one! Indian films entertain, inspire and engage the audiences across the world.
What do you think is the future of Indian films?
We have an amazing new generation emerging in the industry, be it filmmakers, artists, scriptwriters, etc. They bring such a fresh and innovative perspective to the industry. I wouldn’t want to single out any particular individuals as there are many, hugely valued new members of our fraternity. It’s incredibly refreshing to work with such enthusiastic newcomers who just wanna change the way of everything positively
You have been involved with helping to bridge the gap between Indian cinema and Hollywood. How successful have you been in this attempt?
I think that as the world becomes increasingly connected, it is inevitable that the respective industries will continue to converge and collaborate. Slumdog Millionaire was a good example of that integration and highlighted the need and benefits for the two to merge. Hollywood and Bollywood differ hugely in terms of production, content and aesthetics but it is an exciting prospect to think of the potential that we can forge together, moving forward to create an entirely new genre of ‘world’ cinema. Through my own film projects, I was lucky enough to work with international stars such as Kylie, Snoop Dogg and Sylvester Stallone. Each was a wonderful experience in its own right, and so much that we shared and learned from each other in terms of our respective experiences in the entertainment industry.
What film are you working on now?
I have Boss this year which is directed by Tony D’Souza and also the sequel of Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. I am also filming for some very exciting new projects. I also have some very interesting regional projects through my company Grazing Goat Pictures such as the Punjabi film Ba Ji in Problem and the Marathi film 72 Miles. We also just announced another Marathi film Adhantari which will be shot extensively in London and stars Tanisha Mukherjee.
Do you still have any dream role or stunts you would want to play in films?
Now that’s a tough one for sure, let’s just say that there are many and more to come.

The World’s Most Beautiful Garden Now In Dubai…With About 45 Million Flowers.

dubai miracle garden
Featuring over 45 million flowers in stunning designs and breathtaking shapes you’ve not seen anything like Dubai Miracle Garden
The city authorities and entrepreneurs alike are doing well turning Dubai into the world’s best tourist city. They don’t just rely on nature’s blessing; they make conscious efforts to make the city beautiful and become cynosure of all eyes.
A riot of colours as far as the eye can see. A long perimeter wall and four kilometres of pathways decked with bright flowers that glow in the midday sun and still stand out at twilight.

Welcome to Dubai Miracle Garden, the city’s latest outdoor recreational destination, located in Dubailand near the Arabian Ranches.
The little-known park was launched on Valentine’s Day.
Decked with flowers on the ground and hanging from arches, the garden contains up to 45 million flowers. It is currently batting for a Guinness Record for the world’s longest flower wall with a one-km circumference.
Visitors, overwhelmed by the beauty of the garden, have dubbed it a little “piece of Eden”, many admitting they discovered the destination by accident.
Kate Holbrooke, a Canadian who has been living in Dubai for nine years, said she was in awe of what she saw: “Why aren’t they telling people about this? I’ve never seen such a beautiful sight as this.”

A mother of two-and-half-year-old twins Layla and Siena and resident of Falcon City, Holbrooke said she never imagined a “piece of Eden” could be possible in the desert.
“I’ve been to so many cities but have never seen anything like this,” she said.
Besides the flower-decked perimeter wall, there are special vertical and horizontal landscaping designs for each area: arc-shaped walkways, a pathway covered with colourful mini-umbrellas, 10-metre-high flower pyramids, water bodies and flower-decked vintage or designer cars.
Flowers are in the shape of hearts, stars, layers and igloos too. A golf cart can be requested for special-needs or elderly visitors. There are public toilets, ablution and prayer rooms.

“It looks like a perfect pre-nuptial or wedding destination,” said Cathy, a British woman who also found the place by accident.
There’s ample space for outdoor recreation and provision for retail outlets.
The Miracle Garden features flowers which have been planted for the first time in the Gulf region, said park developers.
Abdel Naser Y. Rahhal of Al Ain-based Akar Landscaping and Agriculture Co., said no two seasons will be the same at Miracle Garden as it will follow different themes each season. Akar is the same company that is behind Al Ain Paradise, the size of four football fields and home to approximately 10 million flowers in the garden city near the Omani border. “We are currently concentrating on annual, seasonal flowers,” said Rahhal, adding they are also planting trees on the perimeter as windbreakers.
He said they hope to attract one million visitors a year once fully operational.
“We have put this together with tourists in mind. We also want to demonstrate that it’s possible to green the desert through judicious re-use of waste water, through drip irrigation.”

Rahhal said there are at least 45 natural colours found in the Miracle Garden.
Retail outlets, restaurants, souvenir shops, plant nurseries and a multi-storey car park will form part of the destination in the second phase of its development. Work will start on site in mid-2013.
“In Europe, it’s dead in the winter and alive in spring and summer. We’re the total opposite. Here in the desert, winter is ideal for optimum growth of outdoor flowers. This is just how the world works,” said Rahhal.

World’s Youngest Billionaires.

There are 1,426 billionaires in the world this year. They are the wealthiest of the wealthy. But only 29 members of this elite list are under 40 years old, with that exciting combination of money and youth.
Those 29 have a total of $119 billion between them. 10 of them come from the technology sector, including four from social networking giant Facebook.
11 come from the United States, the rest from other parts of the world. Five are newcomers to the billionaire ranks.
Read the list of the first ten “under 40” billionaires:

Dustin Moskovitz
Age: 28
Net Worth: $3.8 billion
Country: United States

Mark Zuckerberg’s former roommate and Facebook co-founder, Dustin Moskovitz may no longer be with the Menlo Park, Calif.-based social networking giant, but he still holds a significant financial stake in the company. That stake got a little smaller over the summer as he proceeded to sell 7.5 million Facebook shares. Still, as of February, he still owns more than five per cent of the company’s outstanding stock.
Facebook’s third employee, he dropped out Harvard with Zuckerberg and moved to California to work for the social-networking firm full-time. He left in 2008 to start Asana, a software company that aims to improve how people work with project collaboration tools.
Engaged to former journalist Cari Tuna, Moskovitz and his fiancee founded Good Ventures and plan to publish their grants and conversations with charities with the goal of rewarding results over crafty fundraising techniques.
He is also a signee of Bill Gates’ and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge. Moskovitz bikes to work, flies commercial, and pitches his own tent at Burning Man.

Mark Zuckerberg
Age: 28
Net Worth: $13.3 billion
Country: United States

Few Chief Executive Officers of any age are under more media scrutiny than 28-year-old Mark Zuckerberg. Since taking Facebook public in May 2012, the hoodie-wearing founder has seen his net worth rise and fall with every fluctuation of the stock price, which fell under $20 in August 2012. The stock has since rebounded more than 30 per cent as of February on confidence that Facebook may end up figuring out how to make money on mobile ads.
Zuckerberg, a signatory of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge, showed his generosity during the holiday season, gifting 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in December for education initiatives.
Based on share prices at the time, that gift was worth nearly $500 million and was one of the largest gifts to education in 2012.
He has also expressed his willingness to become more involved in the political sphere, hosting a re-election fundraiser with his wife Priscilla Chan for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in February. His big early 2013 exploit was the launch of Facebook’s Graph Search, which will allow users to comb their friend network based on shared interests and experiences.

Albert von Thurn und Taxis
Age: 29
Net Worth: $1.5 billion
Country: Germany

Albert von Thurn und Taxis first appeared in Forbes’ billionaire rankings at age eight but officially inherited his fortune in 2001 on his 18th birthday. In June 2008, he received an M.A. in economics and theology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. His assets include real estate, art and 36,000 hectares of woodland in Germany, one of the largest forest holdings in Europe. His plan to build one of the world’s largest solar energy installations in Bavaria, southern Germany, was put on hold after government subsidies were cancelled.
He lives in the family castle, Schloss Emmeram. The eligible bachelor is also a race car driver and tours with a German auto-racing league.

Scott Duncan
Age: 30
Net Worth: $5.1 billion
Country: United States
Scott Duncan is the youngest of the four children who inherited the massive fortune of late energy-pipeline entrepreneur Dan Duncan, founder of Enterprise Products Partners. Thanks to Enterprise’s impressive rise on the New York Stock Exchange, Scott and his siblings each find themselves $900 million dollars richer than a year ago thanks to the rising value of Enterprise shares and the partnership’s large payout plan. Dan Duncan, formerly the richest man in Houston, died in 2010 at age 77. He grew up poor and formed Enterprise Products with two trucks in 1968, selling door to door. Today Enterprise owns more than 50,000 miles of natural gas, oil, and petrochemical pipelines.

Eduardo Saverin
Age: 30
Net Worth: $2.2 billion
Country: Brazil

Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin renounced his United States citizenship in 2011, news of which broke days before the company’s IPO and drew accusations of tax evasion.
His response: “My decision to expatriate was based solely on my interest in working and living in Singapore, where I have been since 2009.”
Saverin, immortalized in The Social Network as Mark Zuckerberg’s onetime best friend, provided Facebook with early seed money, earning him a one-third stake. This fell to 30 per cent when Zuckerberg’s roommate, Dustin Moskovitz, joined. When the others dropped out of Harvard to relocate to California, Saverin stayed behind.
Facebook later sued him for allegedly interfering with business and insisting on keeping a 30 per cent stake; Saverin countersued. The parties settled, with Saverin apparently receiving a five per cent stake and a co-founder bio on Facebook’s site. He has since sold more than half his stake in Facebook and has started to invest in startups including Qwiki and Jumio, which created the online payment Netswipe.

Huiyan Yang
Age: 31
Net Worth: $5.7 billion
Country: China

Huiyan Yang, the daughter of the co-founder of real estate developer Country Garden Holdings, is once again China’s richest woman with shares of her company up by 46 per cent since September. Yang Huiyan’s father Yeung Kwok Keung transferred his stake to her before the company’s IPO in 2007. Revenue in the first nine months of 2012 was up by 22 per cent to $3.7 billion. Profit rose by 34 per cent to $617 million. The company in January sold $750 million of 10-year bonds to help fund its vibrant portfolio of some 110 projects underway as of mid-2012, many in its home base of Guangdong province. Country Garden is also adding 17 hotels to the 29 it already owns or operates, mostly under the Phoenix brand, and is buying up land in Malaysia. The previous holder of the title of China’s richest woman, Wu Yajun, had her fortune splintered in a divorce last year. Yang has a degree from Ohio State University.

Fahd Hariri
Age: 32
Net Worth: $1.35 billion
Country: Lebanon

Fahd Hariri is the youngest son of slain Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. He graduated from the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture de Paris in 2004. While still a student, he ran an interior design studio on the outskirts of the city and sold furniture to clients in Saudi Arabia. While he reportedly hasn’t set foot in Beirut since his father’s assassination in 2005, he develops residential buildings in there, and credits his father for his love of real estate development.

Marie Besnier Beauvalot
Age: 32
Net Worth: $1.5 billion
Country: France

Marie, 32, along with siblings Emmanuel, 42, and Jean-Michel, 45, inherited French dairy giant Lactalis, producers of popular Président brie among hundreds of other cheese, milk and yogurt brands. Between them, they own 100 per cent of the company their grandfather founded in the 1930s. Lactalis’ once fairly opaque financials were brought to light when the Besnier family, through another holding company, acquired a majority stake in publicly traded Italian milk manufacturer Parmalat in 2011, rescuing it from bankruptcy after the infamous 2003 collapse that landed its founder in jail.

Sean Parker
Age: 33
Net Worth: $2 billion
Country: United States

Sean Parker is turning his big vision and huge Rolodex to fighting cancer–in December he joined “Stand Up To Cancer” to help build an immunology dream team. Parker, 33, is also revamping his much hyped start-up, Airtime, with the hopes that the video chat site will have the impact of his other Web companies–Napster and Facebook. Facebook’s stock comeback helped add $700 million to his fortune since last August. At 19, Parker skipped college to disrupt the recording industry with music swapping site Napster and later advanced viral marketing with his Web address book Plaxo.
He served as Facebook’s first president at age 24, helping streamline the product and organizing the company to ensure his pal Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and CEO, maintained control. He’s fixing the same music industry he helped dismantle a decade ago as director and cheerleader for hot–and legal–music platform Spotify.

Ayman Hariri
Age: 34
Net Worth: $1.35 billion
Country: Lebanon

Ayman Hariri is the son of slain Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. He’s involved in running Saudi Oger, one of Saudi Arabia’s biggest construction companies and the source of the Hariri family fortune. Oger was part of a venture that won a $653 million contract in January 2013 to build a local branch of the Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi, due to open in 2015. His other interests include telecommunications; Oger has a major stake in Turk Telekom. It also owns shares in Middle Eastern banks, such as Jordan’s Arab Bank, which hasn’t fared so well. Saudi Oger had to take out a $1 billion loan in February 2013 to refinance debt related to its investment in Arab Bank

50 Reasons Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Is Not An Agent of The West.

    Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala-manag-001
For too long, we have been fed with lies, innuendos and sarcasm garnished with semblance of truth by desperate hustlers at the Nigerian political scene. We have been made to believe that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the chief driver of the Nigerian economy, gets her orders from Washington and panders to the imperialists’ demands per the Nigerian economy.

Rather than give this woman the needed support to chart the path to Nigeria’s economic recovery, detractors are busy muddling up the water in public sphere with stale and re-awakened allegation of her being an agent of Western imperialists. Truth is, not many of the persons spreading this baseless tarradiddle have done enough to project Nigeria in a respectable stead on the global map as much as this great woman.

As someone who has keenly observed Dr. Okonjo-Iweala over the years, I feel obliged to share some of the reasons I believe she is not an agent of the West in this little op-ed:

Firstly, NOI, as she is fondly called, is one woman who has promoted the Nigerian brand arguably more than any other Nigerian in the Diaspora. For someone with western education and exposure, it could perhaps be pardonable to see her adorned in western attire and speaking with highfalutin western accent. But, not NOI. Her Nigerianness subsists. What’s more, she seems unabashed and unapologetic about her native identity. Her trademark headgear and stylish African attire are a delight to watch on local and foreign TV stations. In addition, her accent is still very much like any other Nigerian, without the least attempt on her part to give it a western slant.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s Nigerianness could not be discussed in the absence of her root. Her father, Professor Chukwuka Okonjo is the Obi from the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State. And NOI, from all indications, seems very proud of her lineage. Do her critics know that her daughter’s wedding was conducted in our traditional setting right in the village of her husband? Do they also know that her son, Uzodinma Iweala, who is an acclaimed writer, has two books set in Africa?

It will be of further interest to note that even as an employee of the World Bank, NOI was very much in touch with home. She was attuned with the social and political situations in Nigeria, and nothing escaped her attention. Perhaps, that informed her frequent shuttling home to see things for herself. Her trips home afforded her the opportunity to discover that there is a dearth of adequate information on public perception across the country. According to her, “this lack often hampers decision-making by both businesses and governments.” That was the reason she put her money where her mouth was by setting up NOI Poll, a non-profit Polling site created to provide timely and relevant information about public opinion on various socio-economic issues in Nigeria. Among others, the Poll’s objective is to give voice to the opinion of ordinary citizens, while empowering decision makers in the private and public sectors with relevant resource for better performance and improved governance.

At TED 2007, NOI made a historic presentation by calling the attention of the world to the fact that what Africa needs is trade and investments, not aid. In her speech, she specifically singled out Nigeria as a choice destination for discerning investors. Even while she was at the helm of affairs at the World Bank as the Managing Director, she promoted the good ideals of Africa by regularly calling attention to the huge amounts of money looted from African states by government officials for deposit in Europe. Listen, friends, no agent of the West will do that!

NOI is known to have pressed the leaders of G-20 to intensify the fight against corruption and asset theft at every given opportunity; and she has long been challenging the G-20s to put this at the top of their agenda whenever they meet. She was also part of those that called for the ratification of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) by all countries. In her own words: “Each year, through acts of corruption, developing countries lose billions of dollars that find safe haven in international financial centres.” Let’s reason friends, a sympathizer of the West would rather want such malfeasance to continue unchecked. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala not only spoke against it; she actively contrived its halt.

While still vigorously canvassing against corruption in Africa, NOI was invited home for the second time to head the Nigerian Finance Ministry; knowing the risks involved in this posting, she could have stayed back in Washington to continue her plum job at the World Bank. But her undying love for her fatherland would not permit that. To Nigeria she returned, and her manning of the finance ministry guard has dealt a huge blow on corruption in the country. In her new role, she has successfully blocked many leakages in government’s spending, notable among which are pension management and oil subsidy financing. Her novel initiative of publishing monthly allocations to the various states and arms of government has also enforced a measure of transparency in governance.

Prior to her return, capital flight to the West by public officials was commonplace. I believe if she was an agent of the West, as some people would have us believe, she would have opened up more freeways for even more illicit funds to find their way overseas. The persons behind these illicit transfers of our national wealth would be better positioned to tell their tales of woe since the reign of this woman they have come to dub “Okonjo Wahala.”

No doubt, her return to the Finance Ministry has led to even more impacts in other areas of our economy. The port reform she is spearheading is one that millions of Nigerians are already benefiting from, as the period of clearing goods have reduced significantly with her eviction agencies with no direct relevance to port activities, except for bureaucratic drawbacks. Now, the reality of a 24-hour port operation has been actualised. This seemed unattainable before her return to the country. The Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) is now a reality. Recurrent Expenditure has been reduced, whilst capital expenditure is on the upward swing.

Now, who says Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is not for us? On the contrary, I think she stands and burns for Nigeria, and indeed Africa!.

1 Million HIV-Positive People In Benue.

The Benue State government has disclosed that over one million out of the 4.5 million population in the state have been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

This was made known at the training of media professional on HIV/AIDS held at the Conference Hall, Ministry of Information, Markurdi, Benue
State, on Thursday.

The Executive Secretary, Benue State Action on Control of AIDS (BESACA), Mrs. Grace Wende, in a paper entitled “Basic facts on HIV/AIDS,” said that about 400,000 children living with the virus have been placed on antiretroviral drugs (ARV), adding that 708,640 adults are living with the disease.

Based on the statistics, about two out of five people in the state are carriers of the disease, with women having it more than men.

“In Benue State, the number of adults infected with HIV/AIDS was 708,640, out of which 21,259 were new infections in 2011. In the same year, 17,139 women were found positive.
The number of children requiring ARV was 398,888,” she said.

Mrs Wende cited the attitude of the people of the state to unprotected sex and the rising number of youths becoming homosexuals as factors responsible for the rise in the scourge.
Speaking further, Mrs. Wende noted that many men who flock around ladies and engage in unprotected sex also transmit the virus to their unsuspecting wives.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Comrad Wegba, regretted that despite the huge amount of funds the state had committed into the fight against the scourge, the disease was
still spreading.

He blamed the practise of unprotected sex and the deliberate spreading of the disease by carriers as the major sources of the spread of
the disease in the state.

“The former governor of the state, Chief George Akume, visited Angola to see the havoc the disease wreaked on the land and ways to reduce the scourge. Unfortunately, while the
prevalence of the disease has reduced in other parts of the country, Benue is getting worse by the day and this is as a result of our attitude to
unprotected sex as well as deliberate move by the carriers to spread the disease,” Wegba said.

Together with Mrs. Wende, the commissioner called for behavioural change among the people, urging them to stick to a partner and
use condom.

QUOTE OF THE DAY.

Be More Concerned With Your Character Than With Your Reputation. Your Character Is What Your Really Are While Your Reputation Is Merely What Others Think You Are.
                                                        - Victor Stober Onwuchekwa.
